Asteroids: the classic space arcade game in your browser

Asteroids is a clone of the classic arcade game built with HTML5 Canvas and plain JavaScript. Fly your ship through an asteroid field, shoot the rocks into ever smaller fragments and survive as long as you can. Nothing to install: it runs right in your browser, for free.

How to play

• Turn with the arrow keys, thrust and fire to destroy the asteroids. Space is toroidal: leave through one edge and you come back through the opposite one.
• Large asteroids split into medium ones and those into small ones. The smaller the rock, the more points it is worth.
• Collect power-ups for triple shot, shield, nova bomb, magnetic field, twin ships or cloaking.
• Every five levels a boss shows up behind a rotating shield: you have to shoot through the gap to beat it and earn a permanent upgrade.

• TRIPLE — Triple shot; it overheats. A 2nd: 3+3, no heat.
• SHIELD — Takes 2 hits and destroys. Stacks up to x2.
• NOVA — One use with [B]: clears the whole screen.
• LIFE — +1 life (max. 5). Late levels only.
• FIELD — Pulls power-ups, pushes enemies (~10 s).
• SLOW — Asteroids at 50 % for about 6 s.
• TIME — Asteroids frozen for about 3 s.
• TWIN — Escort ship that fires with you. Up to x2.
• REAR — Adds a rear shot synced with the front one.
• CLOAK — Nothing touches or sees you for 6 s.

Enemies

• SHOOTING STAR — Shoot it: +150 and drops NOVA (or SLOW/TIME/CLOAK if you already have it).
• UFO — 3 hits: +500 and drops SHIELD or FIELD (violet halo = FIELD).
• BOSS — Every 5 levels. Shoot through the gap in its shield. Beating it gives UPGRADE.
